Sustainability & Community Impact

The extraordinary beauty of Flores Nusa Tenggara—from the pristine coral reefs of Komodo National Park to the sacred, ancestral lands of Wae Rebo—comes with a profound responsibility. At Flores Nusa Tenggara, sustainability is not a marketing term; it is the fundamental principle that guides every decision we make. Our commitment is to ensure that our journeys create a positive, lasting impact, preserving the natural environment and empowering the local communities that make this region so special. Our approach is holistic, focusing on measurable actions across environmental conservation, community empowerment, and cultural preservation.

Environmental Conservation

We are dedicated to minimizing our footprint and actively contributing to the conservation of Flores’ fragile ecosystems.

  • Carbon Offsetting: For every journey booked through us, we calculate the estimated carbon footprint of the land and sea travel within Flores and invest in certified Indonesian carbon offset projects, focusing on reforestation and renewable energy initiatives in the archipelago.
  • Marine Protection: We donate a percentage of our profits from all Komodo-based itineraries directly to the Komodo Survival Program and Manta Watch. Our guides are trained to enforce strict no-touch and responsible interaction protocols during all marine activities, adhering to guidelines set by the Balai Taman Nasional Komodo.
  • Zero Single-Use Plastics: All our partner vessels and vehicles are contractually obligated to be free of single-use plastics. We provide all guests with reusable water bottles and ensure access to filtered water refill stations throughout their journey.
  • Waste Management: We go beyond simple ‘pack-in, pack-out’ policies. We work with our partners in Labuan Bajo and along the Trans-Flores route to ensure proper waste separation and disposal, supporting local recycling initiatives where available.

Community Empowerment

We believe that tourism should be a force for good, providing sustainable economic opportunities and improving livelihoods for the people of Flores.

  • Local Employment Priority: We are proud that over 90% of our on-the-ground team—including our guides, drivers, and boat crew—are residents of East Nusa Tenggara. We invest in their professional development through continuous training in safety, foreign languages, and sustainable tourism practices. See our commitment in action on our team page.
  • Fair-Trade Sourcing: We have established direct, fair-trade partnerships with ikat weaving cooperatives in the Manggarai region and near Maumere. We facilitate direct purchases for our guests, ensuring 100% of the revenue goes to the female artisans, bypassing intermediaries.
  • Community Development Fund: A portion of our annual profits is allocated to a dedicated community fund. In consultation with village elders in Bena and near Kelimutu, these funds support local needs, such as providing educational materials for schools or improving local water infrastructure.

Cultural Preservation

We approach the rich cultures of Flores with the utmost respect, viewing ourselves as guests and facilitators of genuine, non-intrusive cultural exchange.

  • Authentic, Respectful Interactions: Our guides, many of whom are from the local communities, brief our guests on cultural etiquette (adat) before visiting traditional villages like Wae Rebo. We ensure all visits are pre-arranged and include a traditional welcome ceremony, with appropriate contributions made to the community.
  • Supporting Traditional Arts: Beyond weaving, we support other traditional arts by incorporating them into our itineraries, such as visiting traditional salt-makers or learning about the philosophy behind Manggarai architecture directly from community members.
  • Intangible Heritage: We work to preserve and share the oral histories and folklore of the region, ensuring that the stories behind the landscapes are told by the people to whom they belong.

When you travel with us, you are not just a tourist; you are a partner in our mission to protect and celebrate Flores for generations to come. Explore our journeys to see how we integrate these principles into every itinerary.
